Concrete Floor Sealing
Concrete Floor Sealing
A sealer is the finishing touch that protects and adds a touch of beauty to your new concrete floor. Concrete Fusion offers the best products and superior application skills to ensure your concrete sealer exceeds your expectations.
What is the Purpose of a Concrete Sealer?
A concrete sealer enhances and protects your floor. It brings out the natural beauty of the concrete by enriching its colour and adding a glossy finish. Sealing also helps preserve decorative treatments by shielding the surface from abrasions and stains. Some sealers create a protective layer on the concrete’s surface, while others penetrate deeply into the floor.
Concrete sealers come in four main types, including:
Penetrating Sealers (silanes, siloxanes, silicates, siliconates):
- Penetrate concrete to protect against moisture and deicing chemicals.
- Ideal for exterior surfaces prone to corrosion and freeze-thaw damage.
- Invisible, with no surface sheen, maintaining a natural matte finish.
- Provide breathable, long-lasting protection in outdoor conditions.
Acrylic Sealers:
- Form a thin protective film; available in solvent- and water-based formulations.
- Suitable for exterior and interior surfaces, enhancing the look of coloured, stamped, or exposed-aggregate concrete.
- Available in various sheen levels, with solvent-based versions enhancing colour better than water-based ones.
- Offer water protection but may wear faster than polyurethanes or epoxies, especially outdoors.
Polyurethane Sealers:
- Create a thick, protective film that resists scuffs and stains.
- Ideal for high-traffic areas, concrete countertops, and enhancing decorative concrete.
- Available in different sheen levels; non-yellowing and transparent.
- Durable, chemical and abrasion-resistant, but moisture intolerant during application.
Epoxy Sealers:
- Form a high-build, hard, and long-lasting protective film; typically two-component products.
- Best for high-traffic floors, concrete countertops, and cement-based overlays (generally for interior use due to UV sensitivity).
- Available in clear or pigmented finishes, often with a glossy appearance.
- Provide excellent abrasion resistance and water repellency, but may trap moisture if impermeable.
How Do I Know If My Concrete Needs To Be Sealed?
If you’re unsure whether your concrete driveway, patio, pool deck, or garage floor is sealed, a simple test can give you a clue. Pour some water on the surface—if it darkens and absorbs the water, your concrete likely isn’t sealed or may need resealing. Watermarks, oil stains, or mildew can also indicate that sealing is necessary.
