What Is Self-Leveling Concrete?

Self-leveling concrete is a polymer-modified cement designed to create smooth, high-compressive strength surfaces without large amounts of water. It can be applied to any non-flexible surface, such as wood, ceramic tiles, plywood, or concrete.

Self-leveling concrete is applied in a liquid form and spread evenly using a gauging tool, typically in layers ranging from 0.25 to 1.5 inches thick. The resulting surface is smooth, flat, and has superior compressive strength compared to traditional concrete.

Once applied, self-leveling concrete can be finished with decorative overlays, stains, or dyes. It has many advantages for surface preparation over normal concrete, including:

  • Easy installation
  • Quick application
  • Suitability for new or old surfaces

What is Concrete Underlayment?

Underlayment is very similar to self-leveling concrete, with the two terms being used interchangeably in some cases. Basically, it creates a flat surface for other flooring to attach to.

One of the most popular concrete underlayment types is made from a mixture of gypsum and other materials, making it lighter than concrete. The mixture is poured onto a surface, then smoothed to create a perfect surface for other flooring to live on.
