Concrete Coatings in Winter
Low temperatures affect the chemical process of 2 part epoxies. Coatings can be applied in the winter but conditions must be monitored to ensure high quality results are achieved.
The chemicals we use to finish a polished concrete floor have properties that are dependant on temperature. Certain chemicals when installed improperly risk peeling, cracking, and delamination, etc. That’s why it is important to choose a reputable company like Concrete Fusion who can guarantee the quality of the work. We have identified three ways that allow us to work year round installing polished concrete floors in Ontario winters.
Assess all environmental factors.
The projects we do are usually inside warehouses and commercial facilities so the work can often be completed in the winter. How can we prevent disastrous results on projects 10,000 square feet? We need to assess the environmental conditions like humidity, floor temperature, and floor moisture content. Make sure you cross reference your environmental conditions with the data sheet on the product you use.
Heat the slab not the air
The most important factor is the temperature of the floor, not the air. Heated slabs make life easier but it is crucial to monitor the areas near doors and vents as they can cool down if its windy. In other scenarios we have run heaters that increase the temperature and make a safe environment to install in. Again, it is important to make sure you measure the slab temperature, not the air temperature.
Use different products
The term epoxy is often used to describe any type of coating. The truth is that epoxy is just one kind of product we use. Polyurea and polyaspartic coatings are very different than epoxy and not as sensitive to cold temperatures during installation. For projects where temperature cannot be controlled we use these products. They are more expensive but the chemical properties are less vulnerable to cold installation.
Concrete Fusion works on residential, commercial and industrial sites all year round. We are the concrete coating experts and can confidently help you choose the right coating so it won’t have any peeling, cracking or delamination.
If the temperature is below 10 degrees make sure you check with a reputable company who offers a guarantee like ours.
